Dormancy Period???

shelia__greenthumb(6)October 10, 2009

Hi,

I'm a newbie to growing amaryllis. I bought some

Red Lion last Christmas. I planted them in a big planter

this summer. I dug them up and let them dry out a little

now they are in paper bags. How long should I keep them

in darkness before I repot them? I would like to have

blooms in the winter. Thanks for your advice.

I'm including a link that will give you the information you're looking for. If you're looking for blooms to have at Christmas, I do believe you've missed the date to begin putting them to bed, so to speak... but do not despair... there is always next season.

I, personally, don't force a dormancy on any of my bulbs... I grow them as houseplants, and they usually bloom for me in early spring. This is their natural bloom cycle.

If you simply want some color for the upcoming Holidays, bulb kits are cheap enough at the larger stores, such as WalMart, Lowe's, Home Depot... or any store or garden center of that type.

I wish you luck with your bulbs... if you have further questions, we're happy to help. :-)
