WANTED: question about a desert rose

carolnj38March 26, 2010

I just purchased a Desert Rose plant, I think it needs transplanting, I do have the cactus soil, What I need to know is, It has a very large lower trunk, is this supposed to be exposed above the soil? Looks like a lot of roots sticking out of it. The top is very healthy looking but the two buds that were on it fell off.

Any help or data on this plant would be appreciated.

Oh, I also have this on a sill in an East window, it gets morning sun, Is this ok?

thank you, Carol

Hi Carol...every time I buy a desert rose that has buds they abort before they open. It's not uncommon. The big fat base can be raised up out of the soil if you like it that way, I have done so with several of mine, be careful not to expose the freshly raised part to extreme sun until it is used to it.These plants can take full sun and do quite well in it as long as you move it into full sun slowly.
