How do you know when the mother is shot (done)?

I know that a mother plant can pup and repup and repup again if you replant her after removing pups. Is there a way to tell when/if the mother plant is finally shot/done?

When you have enough pups. I am to the stage when the first 2 pups are big enough to remove the mum gets mulched.

Haha, Sunshine, that is a great answer! It reminds me of my trip to Haiti last month. Just before I left, I contacted one of the people there and asked how many ice trays should I bring? The answer was "it depends upon how much ice you want"!
