Floridian agave ID?

TT, zone 5b MAFebruary 20, 2012

Hi -

Vacationing with the family in the Fort Lauderdale area, and ran across these on the beach. I was a little surprised to see these thriving here like this...they are huge! Nice!

Can anybody provide an ID? Thanks!

The big ones look like Agave americana to me, quite common on Florida's west coast, the area I know best. Saw lots of Agave americana marginata as landscape plants in St. Petersburg area.

I think Agave americana for the first, and the spherical form of the second suggests Agave angustifolia.

Thanks for the IDs, guys. Both of these are pretty impressive when they get this big!

I agree with the above. I have both, or had. I sold the big Agave americana due to their large size. Being in the north, too much to bring inside in the fall. I also have Agave angustifolia but in the varigated form. Also too much to bring into the house. I have offered pups to any who wants them.

Wow. Those are some impressive growers! And Stanley, some beautiful little pups there. Love that plant.
