Paonia myops - Small eyed sphinx photo

butterflymomok(7a NE OK)May 22, 2011

Today as I finished up outside, I noticed that there was something in one of the lawn chairs on the patio. When I looked closer, I saw that it was a small sphinx moth. I took photos and tried to move it to a better background, but it wouldn't cooperate. So . . . I'm stuck with the lawn chair webbing. It's a beautiful moth with bluish spots on the hindwing. The hind wings were only visible when the moth was attempting to fly away. I found the ID on Bugguide.

Awwwww. Precious litrle sphinx! You know me and the Sphinx, right?

It looks like you may have a male, abdomen tipped upwards. Females hang straight down. Darn! I was going to suggest a paper bag for egg laying.

Wild Cherry is the larval host.

Great find!

Interesting! The wings have an unusual shape, even for a sphinx moth. I've never seen one here, but there's plenty of wild black cherry, so maybe in the future.
