Mold or mealy bugs on cactus

ktj1089April 8, 2014

Hi! A new cactus owner here! I've noticed a white fuzz at the base of the needles on my cactus. Only at the top and they dot move when I touch them. Cotton like texture. Is this normal?

Please help!

ktj, I am absolutely not an expert, but I believe the fuzz on your plant is entirely normal for certain types of cacti. It's part of the plant itself, and is known as "flocking."

Try searching Google Images for astrophytum flocking. Note that I am not claiming that yours is an astrophytum!

[You're more likely to get an answer on the much busier Cacti & Succulents forum than in this one.]
