You learn something every day or I am sorry

All of you know the saying: "You learn something every day" right?

Well, I learned a whole lot with this Mammillaria plumosa. I learned its flowers have the sweetest scent! In this case, the entire greenhouse smelled nicely even with most most of the plastic having been torn out by Wilma.

I am sorry I can't share the scent with you.

Enjoy the plant, however.

Emy

I have never thought to smell the blooms on mine (I have the pink variety). I'll have to remember to do that. Nice, BIG specimen you have there!

Oh! That LSNED saying is one of my favorites & most used! :)

I had heard that they smelled very nice. I was surprised when several folks here posted their M. plumosas in bloom, and did not mention the scent. My two plumosas in their 4 inch pots have not volunteered to bloom yet. They do seem to grow pretty fast, and I do highly anticipate their eventual blooming..

Beautiful plant!
I wonder whether some have a considerably stronger scent than others, or whether they're primarily fragrant at certain times of the day; I've never noticed the fragrance when mine bloomed, either, and my sense of smell is usually pretty sharp.

I think that time of day has a lot to do with it. I have noticed that this plant and many cacti as well as succulents such as cyanchum smell the strongest during the hot hours of the day. Other succulents, such as Pachypodium lamerei smell the strongest during the early hours of the evening.

I had a good sniff today, admittedly not as many flowers as this, and I couldn't smell anything :(
