Black Swallowtail emerged

glad2garden(5, Chicopee, Mass)July 16, 2014

I'm very excited! A black swallowtail emerged last night or early this morning. I noticed that the color of the chrysalis had darkened yesterday, but I had no idea it would be this quick. There are 4 more on this parsely plant inside the netting.

What a beauty! I had two caterpillars on my parsley plant a week ago and I was eagerly waiting for the chrysalis stage and they somehow disappeared over the weekend. I don't know if they moved somewhere else!

Sorry that I am posting this on two threads, but excitment is building and I just want to get confirmation. The chrysalis has turned nearly black...is this normal?? I have left the chrysalis in peace....and hope it's ok.
THANKS!

He's beautiful!

I'm still waiting for my two to eclose. The first one has been a chrysalis for 9 days now, so I'm hoping it will be soon. Actually I'm kind of hoping it will be tomorrow since I'm a bit worried about the increased rain chances this weekend.

The butterfly looks very healthy and strong.I wish I could have
Had more than just the carry-overs from Fall last Spring, but
I will not even have a Fall brood.

I have prepared a new planting bed,but nothing going on this
Summer except heavy plantings of nectar sources to include
Container plantings I bought already breaking into bloom that
I had to keep maintained while also RVing!

I am lucky to have some very durable and long-term nectar sources
Living on the place to rely on.

But they are not in the carrot family.

I got home from work and look who was waiting! I released him in the garden where I found him and he(?) flew up over the fence and away! Glad to know it's healthy and strong!

Your lovely swallowtail will be back Kristi.
I have a white sapote that the giants use...
they eat and eat, and eat...pupate, emerge and fly away. Within 6 weeks, they return, must remember the place of their birth. I am granted a day or two visitation as they unite and lay eggs on the tree of their own emergence.
What a wonderful world we live in.
