Camellia Plant Won't Bloom

northtexasgirl(z8 FTW)January 2, 2006

Hello everyone. I bought my very first plant this summer. It is in a five gallon pot and I moved it into my greenhouse when the weather started getting cold. When I bought it, it was filled with buds. It still has loads of buds but has never bloomed. Is this normal for this plant? Today, I noticed that one of them looks as if it is trying to bloom but none of the others do. Am I not doing something right? Thanks so much for your advice. :)

I would not be too concerned at this point. Many of my camellias bloom in mid to late season, so I have a lot of varieties that have not even started to bloom yet. Your camellia is probably one of the later season bloomers. Do you have a tag on your plant that gives the name of the variety? That could give us the answer.

Hi camelliagirl. I went out to the greenhouse after I posted this and found the tag on my camellia. It is a Camellia japonica Tom Knudsen. I did some googling and it seems that the bloom time is from Dec. - Feb. so I feel much better now. I have never seen a plant keep big buds for so long without blooming. :) Thanks for your help.

Mine blooms now& started a month later than last year. The buds form over time& grow bigger.I disbud mine some in October.I look at it now and seems I could have dis budded some more.I air layered some branches and did disbud a few more that were higher up in tree.I felt like it'd never bloom too.
