Pittosporum tenuifolium Kohuhu-- good for privacy hedge?

ErinMiller(10 CA)March 9, 2013

I'm looking for someone with experience w/ Pittosporum tenuifolium (Kohuhu) who can tell me if it is good as a privacy hedge. The question is how dense it will be over time relative, say, for example, relative to Pittosporum tenuifolium silver sheen. I've planted Silver Sheen in other locations, and although it gorgeous and shimmery, it is so lace-y that you can really see through it. So not so good for privacy. If you have experience with Pittosporum tenuifolium Kohuhu, and privacy, please let me know.

Here is a link that might be useful: Pittosporum tenuifolium (Kohuhu)

It's pretty dense, but don't prune it much as it is rather prone to dieback. If the summer is very dry it will appreciate watering as it is Japanese in origin - Ian.

It's not much denser than 'Silver Sheen'. Monrovia is promoting a selection of tenuifolium that gets very dense. They call it 'Tasman Ruffles'. 10' tall.

How tall do you need it? 'Marjorie Channon' is decently dense if well watered.

This Metrosideros is what I am looking at to be a medium tall (15') dense screen. Here's a mature specimen I found in the area, Metrosideros 'Springfire'. It's dense.

Have you considered ligustrum japonicum (aka privet, sometimes still mislabeled Texas privet)? They may be ever-so-common in southern California, but for good reason--they work well as privacy hedges, and they fill in fast. And their beautiful dark green leaves make a great backdrop for whatever you want to plant in your newly private domain.

Yes if you really want dense the Ligustrum is going to do it.
