Lobelia laxiflora - a little too lax

chezronMarch 24, 2012

This plant grows and flops, until all the flowers are resting on the ground. Does anyone know how to deal with this problem? I like the plant; I just want it to stand up and bloom. It is in full sun, so that is not the problem.

Keep it sheared to 18" or 24" in height, or scale way back on irrigation so it doesn't grow so tall._

When I lived in Long Beach, CA, a neighbor had a planting in the sideyard, along the fence where it was ignored -- never watered, never fertilized, never cut back. It did fine.

Even so, the plant's normal habit is lax. It doesn't stand upright. Looks nice clambering over the ground.

I guess a ground-hugging plant is alright, except i bought it to feed the hummingbirds. I will probably move it at some point to the back forty, so it can do whatever it wants.
