Dr. William L. Ackerman 1923-1913

The world of botanical research lost a shining star last month when Dr Wm Ackerman died. Growing Camellias in Cold Climates was one of his many publications. I visited his home in Ashton, Maryland a few years ago and he had a remarkable collection of camellias. He continued working and researching after he retired. 'Sweet October'? was the name of a very sweet, fall-blooming camellia with white flowers which I remember.

God bless and keep him. Dr. Ackerman's works will live on for centuries.

I have a few seedling camellias that were given to me by Dr. Ackerman. One is a Camellia oleifera similar to those used in his breeding programs.

He has left Mid-Atlantic gardeners with a valuable legacy.

He will be missed.

There is to be a two hour event at the National Arboretum in memory of Dr. Ackerman on Nov 16 @ 10AM. This will include viewing the camellia collection much of which will be in full bloom. Cost is $12 registration required.

So sad.

I live in Toronto. I bought Dr. Ackerman's book. But I could not find any local nurseries sell hardy camellias. I bought some seeds from online order. I guess they are not hardy enough. I'm overwintering the seedlings in the coldframe.

Keep looking for the hardy ones from Dr. Ackerman, a great man!
