Species chekiangoleosa

stuckinthedirt(6b VA (Shenandoah Valley))October 22, 2012

I am interested in trying to grow the species chekiangoleosa. I like the large bright red/orange flowers, and simply because it is not one of the "common" camellia species.

Does anyone have experience growing this species? I live on the boarder of zones 6/7, and have heard that it may be hardy where I live.

Thanks,

Ed

I think jon_z6b was growing one. See if you can send him GardenWeb Mail.

I have it here in upper zone 7a, but it has not bloomed yet. I would make sure you give it a protected microclimate. And maybe some actual protection the first 2 or 3 years.

Luis - Thanks. It doesn't give me have an option to email jon_z6b. If anyone is in contact with him, ask him to email me, please with his experience.

Dave - I have a NW facing wall on my house that I was thinking of putting this. It gets only a bit of later afternoon sun, and the next house is only about 20 feet away. The is probably the most protected spot I have. Has this grown well for you? How did it do in the cold winter of 2010?

Thanks,
Ed

Sounds good. Mine was very small when I put it in the I didn't baby it too much. It was in dry shade and still hasn't grown much. It seemed to laugh at the cold.
