How can I stop a Crepe/ Crape myrtle from flowering?

I can't kill/ cut them down, the home owner is not ok with that but he says I can do whatever to them to stop them from blooming. I absolutely detest this shrub! it produces so many flowers that blow into my shop and car port. For the next six months I get to blow the shop out twice a day and sweep piles of petals, not something I really want to be doing.

So any advice on something I can spray on them to stop the bloom would be greatly appreciated.

Well, this is a question you don't see every day in a gardening forum. I know there are sprays to prevent fruiting, but I have never heard of a spray to prevent flowering.

It sounds like your shop is a heck of a lot cleaner than my house.

Give it just enough water to stay alive. Mine didn't flower for years, until the next door neighbor put in a sprinkler system that reached them. They burst into bloom the next year and have bloomed every year since.

A google search on key words "Preventing a tree from flowering" got several hits. One which is about a different tree - Tuilip Poplar

"...snip.... One such product is ethephon, sold as Florel Brand Fruit Eliminator®. It must be applied at just the right dosage, at just the right stage of flowering (full bloom) and at just the right temperature range......snip...There is another product called Snipper® that is designed to be injected into the tree while the flowers are still in bud stage. However, the application uses a micro-injection system that requires skilled precision. Like other hormone treatments, timing and dosage are critical. This product should only be applied by a professional." They also said to contact a certified arborist.

"....snip....Apply a fruit-eliminating spray containing ethephon. Sprays with ethephon release a plant hormone called ethylene into your olive tree, which prevents it from flowering."

Just trim off the flower buds before they open. You have to keep after it but it would work. Lack of water does not stop them from blooming.

Get some shade cloth and hang it on the side of the carport facing the crape myrtle. Make sure it's wide enough to reach all the way to ground level. You might have to build a simple frame to support it. It should catch most of the petals, but will still allow decent air flow.

I've done business with the company in the link below. They're OK.
