Chionanthus Retusus

onederwApril 1, 2013

Around here, everyone's chionanthus trees (aka Chinese fringe tree) are exploding with fluffy white flowers. Everyone's except mine, that is. Just a few flowers on the ends of just a couple of branches. This is its third flowering season for me--when I bought it, it was covered with white blooms. Last year was sparse as well, but I chalked it up to a freak windstorm in late November. Now I think there's something I should be doing, or something I should not be doing. The tree is otherwise healthy. Ideas?

My first guess is that it is not getting enough sun where it is located, although mine took several years to bloom really good. A newly purchased plant is usually benefiting from growth regulating chemicals used by the grower to make a plant salable at an earlier age. Al

Mine is having a good year, but last year it didn't bloom much. Mine took a long time to get established and to start blooming. I think it's fine- they are just slow growers.
