Salix viminalis, Common Osier

MalhotteMay 5, 2014

Hello. I'd like to cultivate Salix viminalis, or Common Osier, here near Brockville Ont. Does anyone out there know if this species will thrive here? I have a lot of wet fields and other willow species. And if so, where could I buy the plants? Many thanks, Mal

It does say it can thrive to a zone 3 so that's fine. But as for where? Ask your local garden center for suggestions. In fact you can grow willows from any branches so if your local flowershop has them for ornamental use, you can use them to grow more.

I live in Listowel,On. (50 km north of Waterloo,On.I can supply you with some Salix viminalis, Common Osier. The plant loves sunshine and water. My hardness area is 5a , the winters here quite cold as I live in a snowbelt but the willows do great. I will have a harvest in late March,2015. My rods would be 2/4 years old , 5' in length with a 1/2 diameter and would be $1.50 per rod. Email me if you are interested. I am not in the plant business but I do a spring cutting each year.
