Splitting a Prickly Pear Plant

carling(5a/ON)May 5, 2009

Hi All,

I have tried to find an answer in the forums, I apologize if this has been addressed before.

We have a Prickly Pear Plant that has taken over the garden. We would like to split it into smaller plants. My question is, what is the best method to do this?

We would like to do this as soon as possible, and would appreciate any assistance you folks could provide.

Thanks so much

carling

Hi

Break the cactus into pieces at the nodes. Let the pieces harden off for a couple of days. Then replant into suitable soil.

Hi Mystery gardener,

Thank you for responding, by nodes, do you mean at the base of the pads? Can we not take a section of the plant?
Sorry, as you can tell I am new, but I dont want to kill anything.. lol..

Hi Carling:

Yes, that is correct. This is the safest way, your first post infers you have plenty to work with. Of course you could also experiment with sections depending on the number of plants you eventually want ;-)

MG

Hi MG,

Thank you so much for your assistance!

I can't wait to thin this plant a little, it is taking over!! hahahah, it is beautiful though, just needs a trim.

Once again, thank you for your assistance with this!

Cheers,

Carling
