We just installed some bamboo fencing and were VERY pleased with the customer service at calibamboo.com. I checked their website and they do offer poles 10 feet long in several diameters. They are in Los Angeles.

You should be able to get these in bundles easily, but you may want to call around before you go because certain sizes tend to sell out frequently.

Try:
Oceanic Arts in Whittier mon-sat

A fun store to visit.

Benson Imports in huntington Beach mon-fri

Butler Bamboo in Santa Ana

I haven't visited here yet, but they do seem to have decent prices and were friendly on the phone.I would be curious to hear about them from anybody who has been.

Calibamboo is closer to San Diego. They do have bundles of Tonkin bamboo, and specialize in a nice product of rolled bamboo fencing made of rounds that have been drilled in 4 or 5 places where thick wire is passed through to hold it together.

What do you plan to do with this bamboo?

thanks, holedigger. I'd like to make a trellis/screen on which I would grow yardlong beans and bitter melon, both of which easily grow past six feet. If i can master the art of bamboo craft and make a trellis stable enough to support that, i would try a screen for two sides of a hot tub. Replace the trellis made out of spare parts and junk. I have a sturdy trellis made out of copper plumbing, now covered with passion fruit vine, but 1 inch copper pipe is out of my price range now.

I bought a 4'x8' trellis at Oceanic arts made of 3/4" dia poles spaced 4 inches apart that I really like. They also have rolled pole fences that look good wrapped around 4x4 posts. They have other styles to choose from that are roughly the same price or cheaper than bamboo poles, but not as large (or impressive) as 1-1/2" or 2" diameter would be.They also have some inexpensive woven mat materials and other trim like items you might be interested in.

Also, there is a place near the port of Long Beach called Iron Man (Iron man has some cool insanely cheap rustic wrought iron furniture, trellis, plant stands, etc). There was a company sharing Iron man's warehouse that sold rattan furniture. I bought some cool bent bamboo trellis there a couple of years ago. I am not sure if they are still around but those were a bargain compared to the cost of bamboo poles.

I bought a book called Building Bamboo Fences by Isao Yoshikawa that has some great inspiration photos and knot tying instructions. You might find something like it at the library.

I have promised to make a pair of bamboo gates for my backyard and am only waiting for some momentum.

Lastly, you are welcome to email me if you want some photos of any of the things I have described.
