Do gophers like your blueberries and raspberries?

elschApril 21, 2011

Hi everyone.

I'm about to plant blueberries and raspberries and wondering if they popular with the underground crowd -- are gophers prone to eating their roots?

If so I think I will plant them in baskets.

Gophers will eat anything, Elvie. I don't plant my blueberries in the ground since it's so hard to keep the soil acidic enough. I can be done, but it's a LOT of work. Easier to grow them in pots in California, so that might be a consideration if you're concerned about gophers. Can't speak to raspberries, but if they're near gopher activity, they will be a target.

Aren't berries in the rose family? Gophers love rose roots, I'm sure they'd love berry roots too.

When I planted my blackberries I put them in gopher baskets. So far so good.

Well if so, they don't seem to make a dent in the neighbors blackberries which border and creep under my fence.
