Help ID this tree?

nocalianApril 13, 2010

I have about 10-12 of these trees all through my property. Trying to ID them with no luck, they look like a willow and shed completely in winter..

Here are a couple of the photos

The curvy branches look rather like curly willow.

Can you post closeups of a branch with leaves?

Hi Jean,

The leaves are light green, papery thin and very curly. It's a bit too dark now to take a picture, i will post one tomorrow.

Almost certainly Salix matsudana 'Tortuosa'

Corkscrew Willow is one name.

One of my hiking sticks is made from one of those kind of stems, with a Walnut know on top.

The one in your photo was likely topped or pollarded once in the past.

After seeing pictures of the curly/corkscrew willow on the web, i'm pretty sure these are what I have as well.

Yes MD, you are right, the big tree in the picture was topped off by the previous owner who planted them throughout the periphery of the lot.

I'm a bit surprised you use it for a hiking stick, they seem to be very brittle once the wood is dried or dead. The green ones are stronger, the curly shape is good for hiking though.
