Splitting an Adam's Needle, Yucca Filamentoas

tif22June 12, 2006

I recently moved into a new house and in the front is a giant Yucca Filamentoas or adam's needle.

There are 6 flowering stalks and I think there are 8-10 individual off shoots.

It seems to need to be split as it is very large and crowding itself out.

How do I split it and when is the best time to split it.

(I am in Southern Ontario)

Wow, I tried to eliminate several yuccas from a friends yard because they were large and crowded out the beds. Guess what, they have very deep tap roots and even if a tiny bit remained behind, they come back like dandelion weeds.

Best time is now to split it.. The weather is very accomodating.
