Please help! Can I save this canna?

Hello all!

I walk past a house everyday with beautiful tall Canna plants, about 10 or more lining their fence. I belive that the people who live there do not want the Cannas because every year they chop them down. Of course the plants come back because they do not dig up the root system. I am moving soon and want these in my backyard, so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity.

As I walked past one day I found part of the root of one plant, with a new leaf growing from it. This was found by the dumpster when they attempted to remove one plant. The root had a thin brown lining on it and when I wiped that away the root was white. I wrapped it in a damp paper towel until I got home (5 hours) and them immediately planted it in a 5inch pot. I did this in early June.

The leaf has been turning brown and dry but I have seen no new growth. Did I do the proper steps to try and save this plant? Is there anything else I can do? Or is it just a waiting game to see if new foliage will grow?

Thank you so much!

I thought someone would answer you with more knowledge than me. But....Cannas have a tuber, I have been able to get a piece with a root to grow a tuber and leaves. You may have to take it in this winter and keep it growing through the winter to get a tuber and leaves. As long as you see some green you will be in good shape.

Keep it moist not soaking wet and never let it dry.

I tried to do thay once, but I didnt get the entire bulb. Cannas have bulbs and they are actually pretty large on mature clumps.

I would honestly knock on your neighbors door (even if you dont know them that well) and say how much you love their cannas, but are noticing that they dont, and if you can dig them up. If they dont want them then you are duing manual work for them, and in return getting 100s of dollars worth of cannas. Good luck!
