Is Orchid moss sphagnum?

peace-maker-cp(9)March 26, 2009

A couple of days back I went down to my local hardware store to see if they had any sphagnum moss that I could use as a medium dressing for my plants. They said that they didn't so I tried to see if they had alternatives. I found this moss that was used particularly for orchids and it looked distinctly similar to sphagnum...same coloration, similar texture. The package it was in also said that it was imported directly from New Zealand so I just assumed it to be sphagnum.

Just curious...do any of you CP growers out there use "Orchid moss" or at least know that it is sphagnum.

There is New Zealand Sphagnum moss sold for orchids. Read the package carefully, if it doesnÂt say sphagnum moss anywhere in the package, better to err in the side of caution & donÂt buy it. There are some companies selling decorative moss that will kill your plants if you use it.

It has to read sphagnum moss somewhere.

I read it and on the back of the package it says that it's organic sphagnum. I've put it on my plants' soils and they look a lot more...satisfying : D

HmmmÂ

Wonder why it has to add the word "organic" since sphagnum moss is obviously organic? Make sure that it doesnÂt have some fertilizer additives or wetting agents, these chemicals may be good for regular plants but are deadly for carnivorous plants.

Sorry if I sound somewhat paranoid. But I had bad experience with buying material for my plants, so hopefully the organic part doesnÂt mean it has some additives. If has no additives and is pure sphagnum moss, then it should be all right.

Good luck & happy growing! :-D

Maybe by using "organic" they mean it's completely pure. I don't see anything on the package about any additives, just directions on how to use the moss.
