I am growing Tithonia rotundifolia - Gopher?

chezronJuly 6, 2013

I live near San Diego. I wanted to grow Tithonia since the butterflies like to nectar from it. They are growing great 2-3 feet tall. Lost one to gophers. Apparently the roots are excellent! Yesterday some creature just took a bite out of the stem near the ground and the plant keeled over. The bite is perfectly half moon-shaped and took out half the stem diameter. Is this a gopher too? I guess Tithonia needs a wire basket AND wire stem protection.

Gophers will emerge from the ground and feed on the surface, as well as attacking the roots from underground.
