budworm control on geraniums (pelargoniums)

What have you found to be the most effective control against these pests? I've used BT, but that's only effective AFTER the larvae have destroyed and left the bud. Insecticides don't kill the larve IN the bud. It's a dilemma.

When the eggs hatch, the larvae have to eat their way into the bud and they get BT'd doing that, if it's any consolation.
I hand-squeeze buds with holes in them for the sheer joy of it.
I have also removed every flower as a form of revenge, but the victory is pretty hollow.

To be effective BT must be used before the larvae reach their full size. BT has also a very short life after spraying. Al
