I spotted this butterfly clinging to the side of a cabinet in my laundry room a couple weeks ago after the weather had started cooling off. Its wings were closed and I didn't recognize what it was at first.

I thought it was something unusual so I went running for a container to catch it in, then came back, and when it opened its wings I was surprised. Just a Buckeye. I didn't realize their wings have a more rusty orange color in the fall so it fooled me.
Here it is with its wings open. Its easy to recognize this way.

What beautiful pictures, Christie!

Their undersides are indeed of varying colors -
