help quick! bst pupating on bottom of cage

tpolonyOctober 4, 2010

I thought he was going to pupate on the wall of the mesh container last night, but this morning I found him on the bottom in a curled pupating position. Doesn't seem like he fell, because he was too far out from the wall.

He's lying as close to face down as possible, on top of a towel (terrycloth kind, not paper towel). I don't even know if his butt is connected using a silk pad.

Will he be able to pupate like this? Doesn't he need to have space all around him to wiggle the skin off? What if he doesn't have a silk pad to give him stability? Anything I can do to check to see if he's secure (I hate to mess with him and screw him up somewhow) or help position him for success?

I don't know what to do...

I can email a picture to anyone who wants to try to help. I don't know how to post them here.

I uploaded 2 pictures of the caterpillar to Flickr. Hopefully these links will work. Here they are:

It does look like it started to pupate, but didn't get to finish its sling. I've had them successfully pupate laying down, but I would recommend putting it on a piece of wax paper. It might stick to the towel once it pupates and starts to harden.

Thanks for the tip. The wax paper worked great.

I didn't get to see it happen, but he pupated fine. He must've slid around a bit on the slippery paper as he was near the edge of it when it was over. I cut a big piece and put him in the center to give him a lot of wiggle/sliding room.
