Butterfly bush question

maximum(9/10)September 7, 2007

I have a very large Butterfly Bush (6' x 8')that I would like to transplant this Fall. Do I need to cut it back or can I transplant it as is? Also, can I divide it?

You'd be better off rooting a cutting (buddleas root easily), and planting that out next spring. Large woody shrubs rarely transplant well, and buddleas don't divide. Or you could do both, and save the cutting as backup, if the shrub doesn't make it thru the shock of transplanting.

I've tried that and it didn't work for me. Im just waiting for fall to start so I can just go buy a new one.

Maximium, I did that this fall with no problems. I left most of the buddleia intact, only pruning what was necessary to make it moveable. In February, I cut back to a few main canes - around 12 inches tall. It bloomed great for me this year.
