grow a climber rose in large container

roksee(Benicia SF Bay Area)September 3, 2013

I am in Benicia Ca.... hot summers.. sometimes in 90s but usually in 80s and winters sometimes down to 35 but mostly in the low 40s. I know that this is a real stretch but I was hoping that I might be able to plant my Garden Sun climber rose in a very large container and train it to grow along my pergola.
Since it would be in a container I would make certain it is in a sunny spot.

Is there ANYone out there who thinks this could be successful?

I would ask on the rose forum because someone there would know how this rose grows and how large it would be. Some of the smaller climbers can live in pots but most want to be in the ground to give a satisfactory show of flowers.

A half oak wine barrel or larger and hooked up to automatic irrigation should make this possible. It would be even happier if you place it in a pot with the bottom removed, and saw cut through your concrete slab so that it may root into the ground.
