Re:Criniums HELP

tiarella(7b)February 25, 2010

I'm recently transplanted from NJ to Sc so I am not too familiar with southern plants. I purchased 2 cinium lilies from Lowe's and now I don't know when to plant or how deeply. Instructions say to plant bulb just below the dirt. Does that mean to bury the bulb and the neck of the bulb or just the round part; like an amaryllis should be planted. Also when to plant in upstate SC? These are expensive bulbs so I don't want to mess them up! Can I plant them in a pot to get them started? or just wait until the weather warms up? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

Go to www.southernbulbs.com He has a lot of information on crinums. He spoke at my garden club in Raleigh. Don't hesitate to call him. Easy to talk to. His name is Chris. Very young but very knowledgeable. He will talk you through it and you will learn alot. Expert on the bulb. I just discovered crinums last year and had him come talk to our garden club. He supplies the Southern Living Series of bulbs that Lowe's carries. What you bought may be his bulbs. He is from Texas. I'm still learning myslef when it comes to crinums. Love the plant. Good luck

Guess my intuition was correct; Southernbulbs say to plant the round part of the bulb underground and the neck can stick up aboveground. Thanks for your advice!
