Cypress Vine - asking for trouble?

cutejuiceApril 29, 2008

I got a cutting of this from a plant festival. Such a pretty vine but I've read that it can be invasive and weed-like in the south. I would think that I would see it around here (Charlotte) if that were the case. Does anyone have experience positive or negative with this reseeding vine? I'd like to grow it but I'm afraid I'll regret it.

It will definitly reseed anywhere there is good soil. It is such a delicate leaf though, that it doesn't shade out anything else. I have a friend in Shelby who has it coming up from every pot and bed, but it doesn't bother her, so she lets the situation get worse year to year. I assume if you stayed on top of pulling the seedlings before they bloomes and set seed in unwanted areas, you could manage the proliferation.

The other option is to plant it to grow up something in the middle of the lawn, so the seedlings will just be mown down. I've seen that a lot too.
Good luck,

yup- I have it and weed out all but a few each year. I just allow a few to grow each year since i like the color & form. The seedlings are very easy to recognize- nothing else looks remotely like them. They do continue to germinate all summer long- so it isn't a one time grubbing out, but they are easy to pull. It is a good idea to plant it somewhere you can just mow down the strays if that's possible- like around a lamppost, mailbox or something along those lines. Cuts your work down by a lot.
