Forming on my Parodia Buiningii. Flower? Goiter?

Laura RobichaudJuly 26, 2014

This nodule started appearing at the growth point of my Parodia Buiningii in the winter. I thought it was a flower. It's been outside in a southwest location at our cabin in northern Vermont since May. As you can see, this cactus has kept growing, as the nodule has moved down the plant as it's put on new growth. However this growth, that I long thought was a flower forming, has stayed the same. It has has been the same shape/size/color for months.

Searching the internet, I can't find anything that looks like it forming on this particular plant. Any ideas?

The thing looks like a failed fruit. I get them on Epiphyllums, sometimes on Gymnocalyciums. The ones on the jungle cacti often shrivel and drop, but the ones on the desert cacti seem to be content to just exist. I had one on a G. mihanovichii for 2 years before I accidentally knocked it off.

I'll take one next weekend. I'm back in Massachusetts now. It might be some kind of a mutant pup.

It would have to be mutant, because I have never seen Parodia buiningii make an offset.

Lol Seed!

I know these plants rarely offset and if they do, they would near the bottom. Whatever it is, it appears to be albino anyway. It kind of looks like an eye. Ewww
