Agave Silver Surfer in Zone 8?

KendraSchmidtJuly 5, 2012

I live in an area that often has cloud cover, though not every day, but it is quite a bit of cloud cover. I am in Zone 8a, and I would like to know if it is possible for me to plant an Agave Silver Surfer outside.

I've read that it's hardiness starts at Zone 8, but I've read elsewhere Zone 7. Has anyone had success with the Silver Surfer in a Zone 8a environment? If so, can you give me some tips on how to protect it during the winter.

Our weather has been known to drop to 14f during the winter...a touch lower on rare occasions as well.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have been growing this agave in a part shade location for over a year now. In shade you may notice stretched leaves. Plant Delights nursery here in NC, zone 7b has been growing them for years with no protection.

During cold spells, specially with wet conditions cover with a large pot. Once the plant is larger it will harden off. You could still cover with a frost cloth and use pvc tubes to create a tent like structure.
