Clematis to NOT bloom with New Dawn rose

alicate(SW Michigan, zone 5)February 14, 2013

Hi! I am putting in a New Dawn Rose on my trellis this spring. I would like the rose to bloom alone, at least its first flush. I would love to plant two clematis, both type 3 for ease of pruning. One I would love to bloom early than the ND and the other after the ND. Any particular ones you think would fit the bill?

Most people want them to bloom together, but I guess I am in the minority here. I am in Michigan in zone 5. Thanks for any help!

New Dawn is a repeat should be in bloom from May through to frost. Unless you pick a very early blooming clematis like a macropetala or alpina, you will have both the rose and vine in bloom at the same time at least once during the season. And since both of these are type 1 or no prune, I'd stick with a type 3 and let them go together :-)

As gardengal said, the type 3 bloomers are not the early bloomers, so you will have to settle for having them bloom with or after New Dawn. Most of my type 3 clematis start blooming in early to mid-July if that helps with your planning. I don't know when New Dawn starts blooming.

Thanks for the advice. I will go with a type 3 as I did some more reading on that after your replies. Now the fun of choosing exactly which one!
