San Fernando Valley --Landscaping Makeover

compumomDecember 6, 2012

I'm here for help! Having been a member on the Home Forum for 10 years I know that the GW can offer amazing resources and referrals.
We've lived in our house for over 35 years and have recently updated the interior. The garden however is an another story. We have a mix of areas that need attention. Most of our hardscape is staying put except for replacing an iron stair rail for the front steps and a side yard which needs a gate, drains and paving. The plantings and the lawns need updating, freshening and perhaps some new trees.

I'm seeking referrals of fantastic gardeners or reasonably priced and licensed landscapers who can assist us with this undertaking. We have had a couple of landscapers come to bid the project, but the costs have been astronomical and frankly, over the top in design as well.

If you have any resources to share or ideas for us, please email me through GW.
Thanks in advance for your time!

Consider doing it yourself. I decided to go with an edible ornamental landscape with successive ripening in mind. Otherwise, hiring a good landscaper is going to be pricey.

You can usually get good landscaping advice from nursery owners. If you go to a privately owned nursery and buy all of your plants there, they sometimes come out to your house and design a landscape for free. My mom did that, and she's still happy with her landscaping fifteen years later, and she's a fanatical and hard-to-please gardener.

Thankyou both for your suggestions. I cannot do it myself, but I will contact Sperling Nursery and ask about a landscape designer.
If anyone else would like to weigh in, I'd appreciate it!
