Pruning group 2 question

forensicmomMarch 2, 2012

I know this group of clematis do not usually need pruning but my Henryii was huge and overgrown last year, so early spring I pruned him way down, in an attempt to reguide him through the arbor the right way. Things got away from me and he grew so fast that I wasn't able to keep up fast enough. By the end of the summer, it was huge and almost falling over. Still beautiful, but huge.

Will it hurt the blooms if I cut it back and try again?

If it were mine I would let it bloom and then cut it way back. If you prune it back now it will delay the bloom but most type II's will have a full bloom later in the season.

I prune most of my II's as III's, hard prune every year or they are a mess.
