Has anyone dealt with such an interesting gritty mix?

bkvlad21July 24, 2014

I tried to make my own Al's gritty mix but the ingredients, especially turface is impossible to get without a 3 hour drive. In a local store, however, I found Hoffman Bonsai Soil mix.

I urgently need to replant my jade because it's not feeling too well and also I just found some tiny black and white bugs on it.

This mix is made from haydite, sand pebble, aged pine bark, and turface!

Sounds good to me :D

What do you guys think? Is it comparable to Al's?

It'll grow it's fair share of succulets. Apply the basic principles that are also explained. Ultimitly it comes down to how an individule treats a plant though out the cultivating experiances.

Hoffman's bonsai mix is better than any peat based soil. It's a step in the right direction.

I would definitely consider investing in the gritty mix--it saved my jade when it lost nearly all of its leaves.

The ingredients sound right, how about a picture of the mix.

It's better than most....but it's not sifted as well as it could be. I would recommend a sifting over insect screen to remove the fine / dusty particulate.
