Help me choose a clematis please?

gardenbug(8b)March 9, 2010

Hi, I still haven't decided on a clematis and I want to plant some clematis this year next to my trellis/fence. I need some names of clematis that will thrive in morning shade and afternoon sun.(West Exposure) I prefer white, cream or a very rich mauve. Thank you.

I have several , and the sweet autumn can't be

beat. Smells wonderful and grows fast and

doesn't take much care. I love mine.

Huldine would be my choice. Most mauves will fade in afternoon sun.

Thank you everyone for all your help. gardengal, thanks I will check the other forum. Sorry about my cross post. I will stay in the clematis forum.

Buyorsell-can I ask you why you think Huldine would be a good choice? I love the white. I think it will go lovely against my dark red cedar fence. The cedar posts are dark green.

I get morning shade along the fence until around 2pm and hot afternoon sun after that. West exposure. Would it be happy there?

Caroline - I like the idea of Montana because it's fast growing. Thanks again.

Sweet Autumn can be very invasive although some say that they have absolutely no problems with it. People either adore it or hate/curse at it. Either way, it is a huge vine and needs a LOT of space. The Huldine sounds like a better suggestion. I'm partial to Alba Luxurians. It's a Viticella with white flowers that open with a splash of green on the tips and contrasting dark purple-black anthers. Grows to 12'
