When to divide Clivia?

The pot my 10yr.old Clivia is in seems to be getting too small as many roots have come to the top of the soil level. It is a large plant and should be divided and re-potted.

When is the best time to do this?

Also, will the Clivia be ok under a 6ft. eave during the winter? We do get frosty nights here. What is the max. low temperature for it?

Hi Helga,

You can divide anytime. Nov./Dec.is probably best, since it is dormant.

My outdoor Clivias tolerate morning temps for a couple hours down to the low 20'sF during our 1-2 weeks of "cold" here in the central valley of CA. You can cover them with burlap or string some regular Christmas lights around them for a few degrees additional warmth if necessary.
