Rosa Carolina (Carolina Rose)

mrsig(SC Zone 8)June 26, 2008

Anybody have this? I think I have some growing wild in one of my backyard beds. I noticed it there a couple of seasons ago and thought the foliage looked like a rose, plus the stems were loaded with thorns, so I passed over it with the weedeater and the next season I was rewarded with a nice set of blooms. Since then, it's multiplied through suckers

The only problem is I'm not positive this one is "Rosa Carolina" as every description I've seen of that rose on the web specficially says it produces bright red rose-hips. Mine has rose hips that are just a plain greenish-white in color. Plus, the bloom color is a pale pink which is different from what I've seen in those same internet searches. So I'm thinking it must be some other type of native rose.

I've attached a link for Carolina Rose below.

I have Carolina rose. The hips do eventually turn red, although they're not read yet, and the blooms are pale/medium pink.

Close-ups of flower:

The thorns of R. carolina are straight, not curved.

That's it.

I just realized I forgot the link I promised in my original post. Here it is:

I especially like the fragrance of this rose -- a combination of lemon and rose. Yummy!

Just a shame that it only blooms once, but I guess we're just spoiled by bio-engineered repeat bloomers in that regard.
