Brand New Community Garden and Urban Farm

ghouliegrrrl(z9b CA)November 16, 2013

Hey there!

We are in the middle of starting a community garden and urban farm. I've been browsing this community and love all the great information here.

Do you have any recommendations for what to wall the raised beds with? We are unable to dig into the ground due to underlying stone, so everything will have to be above ground. Cost is, of course, an issue.

Also, what are you all filling your beds with? Premixed potting soil? "Mel's Mix"? Hugelkultur?

Thank you!!!

Landscape timbers work well for a low cost bed wall. A mixture of soil with liberal additions of compost would be a good start for filling the beds. These would be good questions for all the founders of the community garden to address together: it would help mold the community.
