Swiss Chard

fernsk(z2 Canada)May 4, 2006

Hi

I was wondering if anyone knew whether Swiss Chard would make a good companion to Cucumbers, Tomatos and/or Peppers?

I am planning some containers (15 inch diameter) and want to make a mixed planting if possible for my little patio garden. Eventually I'll have a 5'x 3' Raised bed [on soil] but this year [during the digging up the lawn process] I will need to use a few containers. I know that basil would go well with the Tomato but I want to make all of my containers look nice as well as produce "bumper crops"

Thanks for any info

Fern

I let my volunteer Chard (no till garden) come up next to tomatoes... no problem there... chard can get pretty big, so you need to keep it picked I reckon. I started some inside in a long narrow container this spring, and it seems happy there! Needs a lot of sun and water... keep those containers watered from underneath. I'm experimenting every year with more container stuff (gettin' old!) and water seems to be the main thing.

Good luck!

I grow my "Bright Lights" Swiss chard in my flower beds, even alongside roses! So I think they make good companions to anything :)

I know this is an ancient thread, but I wanted to point out that you're not supposed to grow Swiss Chard near cucurbits (cucumbers, squash, melons, gourds), and that it can be problematic with some herbs that need high nutrition.

Other than that, it's one of the best companion plants, maintaining ground humidity and attracting beneficial insects.
