Compaion plant for Columbines?

Janeen_IN(z5IN)June 12, 2004

I love to garden but don't know what I'm doing sometime. I am planing a flower garden for my front bed (sunny) and looked on net and in books and picked: Eye of the Tiger Iris (violet, Rust, and Gold), Black eyed Indian Susan (suppose to have mahoney foliage), New Orange Coneflower, Achillea Firland, Black eyed Susan Daylilies, and Columbines (mixed). I need a Violet Color 18-20 inch plant that blooms June-Aug to put in front of the Columbines? I plan on putting a Gold Dwarf Daylily in the Front. Any suggestions? Was trying to go with the Violet, Gold, Rust colors of the Iris. My house is a Dark Golden Yellow color called Lion's Mane.

lavender? some short version of penstemon? I don't know much either but that has worked for me and the blooming times are right, though lavender's blooming time is shorter. Deadhead the black eyed susan, as it can get out of control reseeding itself :)

Do they have to be perennials????? Of course there's lots of annuals...... purple speedwells..... veronicas....... mallows..... and though they're a little later blooming..... scabiosas and coneflowers...... :) alliums too but they won't bloom through august...... I think short campanulas would work...... :) .... lik creeping bellflower ...... :)

I put in some salvias - don't remember which type - but they are dark blue/purple.

I grow Bee Balm with mine. It's about 36 inches tall with magenta blooms.
