Companions Crocosmia Lucifer and Coneflower

mjhtmh(5)July 23, 2007

I have a flower bed in front of my house which has the perennial yellow digitalis, crocosmia lucifer and purple coneflower. The digitalis is done blooming by early July when the crocosmia takes over. I planted the coneflower to act as a natural "stake" for the tall crocosmia, but I still have a lot of space at the front of the border and want more color/blooms. Any suggestions on something "shorter" that is a long summer bloomer I can intersperse amongst/in front of the coneflower?

nepeta 'Walker's Low' or 'Six Hills Giant' will give you summer long blooms and lacy foliage to hide the feet of your taller plants. You'll need to give each plant 3 feet of width, so you may only want to use one. Follow My Page link to my blog and I talk about using it in my drought, deer blog this month. I'm usually over on the Cottage Garden forum.
