Please help me find the right Crepe Myrtle tree.

yetoJuly 1, 2011

I see these beautiful "watermelon color" crepe myrtle trees in all the small towns from Columbia, SC to Charleston, SC. They are in full bloom now 7/1. The blooms are "watermelon" in color and the leaves are dark green. Would anyone be able to tell me the name of these trees?

Thanks in advance for any help,

'Tuscarora', perhaps.

Back when I was looking for them I found about 5 named cultivars that had similar color but were a tiny bit different on mature height or time of bloom. One of them even has 'watermelon' in its name. I kept the tag for the one I bought and I'll dig it out of my old label box when I get home.

Check out 'Arapaho'. Thats what I got. It is on the darker purpler side of watermelon pink. It is also one of the taller types.

If it matters you want to check the bloom times because some of the cultivars have very similar bloom colors but bloom earlier or longer than others.

What I've found with crape myrtles is that color is subjective, and all resources use different color names to describe the various/numerous shades of pink or red (it's confusingly maddening).

Here's a nice flower color image to use for reference.
