Clematis japonica

nckvilledudes(7a NC)May 5, 2009

Here is a clematis that I managed to kill twice planting it in the ground in two different locations where other clematis did wonderful for me. Last spring I decided to give it another go but this time in a pot to see if it liked its conditions there better and it seems to have liked it. First pictures from this plant since planting it last spring.

It's lovely, Miguel. I bought one from Brushwood last season. No sign of Japonica yet this spring...

Miguel, it's gorgeous.
I think I will take your advice and try mine in a pot.
How big is your pot?

Don't know what the problem is Jeanne. I tried two different areas where other things grow fine but it didn't like it. Perhaps it is a drainage issue??

Carrie, mine never died back so I had brown stems up all winter long to look at. Hopefully you aren't having the same issue I did when I tried growing it in the ground.

Helen, the pot is 3 feet tall and about 2 1/2 feet wide at the top. Of course, I have three integrifolias (two from seed I grew and one Mongolian Bells from Koi Gardens) planted in the pot with it.

Miguel, I am assuming the pot stays outside during winter.
Can't imagine lugging that into the garage.
