Pruning Montana Clematis

Betty LevarMay 2, 2014

I have two Montana clematis's growing on my chain link fence for a number of years. I have yet to prune it but it is getting heavy looking and I am sure there are numerous dead limbs on it. Would it be best to prune it in the fall after the leaves fall or after it blooms. It is lovely when it blooms and is just loaded with pink flowers.

You can prune out dead vines after it blooms.

After it blooms. If you do it in the Autumn you will cut off the flower buds for next spring. Even done after flowering you will have reduced flowering next year.

Thank you for your advice. It is very heavy on the fence and there are numerous dead vines interwoven I have to go something. So after it blooms, which is always spectacular, I will reduce it somewhat. Thanks again.
