Cedrus Gallery 2012 (Attempt #2)

severnsideAugust 21, 2012

This is simply to have pictures linked to Google searches for the general net picture database. I could care less if it's just the spiders in here looking.

Cedrus libani var.atlantica 'Sapphire Nymph' (unstaked and sheared to make a low and slow rambler)

Cedrus libani 'Green Prince'

Cedrus deodara 'Blue Dwarf' (blue during winter months)

Lovely! I especially like that 'Sapphire Nymph'. I wonder if they switched all the 'galleries' to 'Gallery' because it makes them more searchable? But I think for that to be true each photo needs a caption and perhaps even its own url. No way to police the captioning and they don't have their own urls in here...

Anyway, thanks for being persistent!

Thanks FF, GW don't realise that the galleries need to be side by side with the discussions to get the cross flow. Dumping them here takes the traffic to a trickle, both viewing and posting pics. But they *never listen*, sorry to be pessimistic even while persistant ;)

Thanks for the pix, severnside. I have none to share as they don't do well here but do agree that 'Sapphire Nymph' is a beauty.

BTW, did you ever show us pix of the Severn that you're on the side of?

Thanks Tj, I'm glad to know that Cedars can be sheared like Yews. I'm not into topiary but being space limited that'll be a useful way to rein in growth judiciously. I'll have to seek out a couple of pics that show the Severn well and put them up (you could click on one of my pics to go into my PB account and look in my 'random' folder, it has some sunsets over the channel from my garden)

I'm tempted to buy another 'Kenwith' Sam, I had one which died due to negligence and had loved the look of it.

That 'Pygmaea' is lovely FF.

Cedrus libani 'Taurus'. Although it has nice proportions here I'm going to carfeully shear this one to keep it more compact and dense over time, but not tight.

That's an epic prince there Sam, more like a king. I'm waiting for mine to darken but I see they can stay a lighter shade from yours, which otherwise looks very dense and healthy.

Mine is only about half the size of your close-up by comparison!

Agreed, that 'Green Prince' is very impressive, Sam. How old is it?

It's at least 20-25 years old: Thanks for the compliments!

Here is a new specimen added to my garden this week. I'm trying to identify the cultivar. Any ideas?

Edwin, plantlist.org classifies it as a distinct species... And it shows that Cedrus libani var. atlantica is a synonym for this distinct species.(see link)

Someone down the street had one a similar size just cut down. Really sad as I drove around it's floored limbs mid felling on the way out to work. Bye bye champ.

Sam, this is strange and completely new to me.
As a nurseryman I was told to change all Cedrus atlantica and it's cultivars into Cedrus libani var. atlantica.
I hope that resin can help us out with this...

Late to the party but I'm still bringing some good liquor!

Cedrus libani 'Green Knight' (syn: 'Green Prince'). Likely the same plant but it bears watching because my two specimens *seem* slower growing.

Cedrus deodara 'Gold Nugget' Australian origins I believe, a tempermental plant.

Cedrus libani var. atlantica 'Mt. Saint Catherine' - Choice and rare, what a beauty.

Cedrus libani 'Aurea Prostrata' - A super healthy gold and no sunburn.

Cedrus deodara 'Raywood's Prostrate Dwarf' - The heathers and heaths around it this time of year are lit on fire.

Cedrus libani var. atlantica 'Sapphire Nymph' - Staked for height.

Nice pics, Will. Is it right for a firefighter to have a pic so ablaze like that 'Raywood's Prostrate Dwarf' and friends?

What are the two different heaths or heathers in the picture up above?

I looove it when my garden is on fire, TJ. :)

To be honest, I'm not sure of the top plant, but the bottom is 'Robert Chapman', a common, but wonderfully beautiful Winter heather.

Reviving this thread once more in the hopes that some folks still have cedars to share!

brevifolia 'Kenwith' has congested growth on older wood with narrow, upright shoots from the current season's growth
Needles are 1.5 cm long and very dark green.

I love the artistic, windswept form that cedar has, Alex!
It will be fun to watch it develop its character.
