Getting rid of a crepe myrtle

mclemAugust 18, 2011

I'm trying my best to get rid of a crepe myrtle. About 1 1/2 years ago I chopped it down. It grew back. This spring, I dug out a lot of the roots, but it's growing from where I chopped the roots. Would something like Roundup or a brush killer do the job so I don't have to get pulling out the new growth.

This is some type of native, wild plant. Originally planted about 12 years ago from a volunteer in my Mom's yard. Now too big for the location and hope to plant something smaller (shrubbery) in the location.

It seems a crepe myrtle is Hydra like.

Crepe myrtle is not native, but it may have sprung up from a seed or was a root sprout from another one in your mom's yard.

Make fresh cuts with pruners and lightly apply brush killer (formulated for woody plants) on the cut stumps. Depending on how much energy it has, it may sprout a little again. Just repeat the procedure.
