Help identifying Blue Spruce disease

greenmountain(3)January 3, 2009

I am hopeful someone on this forum can assist in identification and suggestions for treatment of a disease that has taken hold of a stand of Blue Spruce trees in our backyard. The trees were transplanted here ~2001 (when they were obviously of considerable size). This spring I noticed needles turning brown and dropping, the problem started near the bottom of the trees, and has worked it's way to the end of the branches and now up the trees. The problem is progressing.

I have posted some pictures at:

Please note it is now winter here in the Northeast, nightly temperatures below zero F, so I am guessing treatment will have to await warmer weather.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

Looks to me like you waited to long to salvage these trees because of the progression of the disease.

Stigmina is found on needles of trees showing symptoms very similar to those caused by Rhizosphaera needle cast (purpling and loss of older needles, working from the bottom of the tree to top).

Problem probably caused from the stress of transplanting.
